Marsden Architects, Inc. is a full-service architecture firm based in North Lake Tahoe, California. We are the realization of a unique vision for what a small architecture firm can be. Our intimate size allows us to take a holistic approach to the design process, giving each project the individualized hands-on attention and enthusiasm required to create exceptional architecture.

It is our mission to create architecturally inspiring homes that respond to the dynamic needs of our clients with reference to their lifestyles, families, and personalities. Beyond providing shelter from the elements, we believe a well-designed home also serves to elevate the human spirit and enhance the lives of its inhabitants. We achieve this level of design success by focusing on creativity, quality, and communication.

We bring original concepts and ideas to every project. We are thoughtful and thorough in each step of the design process, from first design schematics to construction document production. We invest in cutting edge technology that allows us to utilize the latest in 3D modeling software, graphics, and virtual reality to bring our designs to life. Most importantly, we first listen carefully to the client to interpret their vision for the project team.

From conception to completion, we strive to make each creative project an exciting, collaborative, and enjoyable process for all involved. At MAI the passion is in the process - we love our craft and remain grateful every day for the rewarding work we get to do and the wonderful clients we work with.

As the President and Principal, it was Ryan’s vision to pursue his own philosophy of architecture that led to the founding of Marsden Architects. His passion for his craft is only matched by his dedication to his clients. Ryan is intimately involved in all aspects of every project, and his thoughtful focus on the client and on quality-driven design have become the guiding principles of the firm. His architectural work focuses on innovative design solutions that also engage the context of a site’s natural setting. Selections from his portfolio have been featured in Mountain Living, Tahoe Quarterly, Cowgirl Magazine, and Timber Home Living, among other publications.

Ryan received his architecture education at the University of Colorado and went on to have an esteemed 11-year tenure with Kelly & Stone Architects (KS|a) as Lead Designer and Senior Project Architect before setting out to establish his own firm. He has performed work and is a licensed architect in the states of California, Nevada, Colorado, Michigan, and West Virginia.

"Ultimately it is about the relationships and friendships formed throughout a project.  Getting to know each client's unique vision, family dynamics, and personal tastes all create a story that I am lucky enough to interpret into architecture."

Kenzie joined Marsden Architects in January of 2019 as an Intern Architect. She is a 3D modeling and graphics expert and a critical asset to the MA team. She possesses a discerning interest in the field of architecture and is keen to learn as much as possible while working under the firm's Principal, Ryan Marsden. Kenzie attended the University of Colorado at Boulder, where she played on the women's soccer team while obtaining her bachelor's degree in Environmental Design. Growing up in the Lake Tahoe Basin, Kenzie always knew she would someday return to the Sierra Nevada Mountains and has happily found her home in Truckee. When not in the studio, she can be found coaching at Dreamtown CrossFit, hiking wtih her dog Tuli, paddle boarding, camping, skiing, and pursuing all the other fun activities Lake Tahoe has to offer.

Keegan joined the MA team as a Project Manager and Designer in 2019, and brings a wealth of experience from different perspectives within the industry. A native of the Chicago area, Keegan dreamed of living in the mountains to pursue his love of skiing and mountain biking. He relocated to Lake Tahoe in 2012 after receiving his Bachelor of Architecture (BARCH) from CalPoly - San Luis Obispo. For Keegan, the mountain environment offers unbounded opportunities for the design of great spaces, inspiring an exceptional lifestyle and distinctive style of architecture.

Matt joined Marsden Architects as the Business Manager to oversee day-to-day operations and marketing efforts. Prior to joining MA, he worked in the real estate industry in Colorado, the vacation rental industry in North Lake Tahoe, and for the Chamber Resort Association in Steamboat Springs where he developed an affinity for supporting and furthering small businesses. Originally from Michigan, Matt headed west drawn by the mountains and received his BA from The University of Colorado at Boulder. A self-professed architecture nerd, he enjoys being a part of the creative environment at MAI and promoting the firm's unique vision. Matt's interests include exploring the Sierra Nevada and Rocky Mountain ranges, skiing, wake surfing, reading, cooking, and travel.

SAM Carpenter

Sam joined the MA team in the summer of 2021 as an intern architect, and serves the team as a 3D modeler and rendering specialist. He is currently on co-op between his fourth and fifth year of college, and is on his way to attaining a Bachelor of Architecture from Mississippi State University. Originally from Alabama, Sam saw the Lake Tahoe area and its unique architectural style captivating and unlike anything he had ever experienced. When not in the office, Sam enjoys wakeboarding, skiing, and playing country music.

Natalie joined the MA team as an intern architect in August of 2021. A Tahoe local and Truckee graduate from Sugar Bowl Ski Academy, Natalie pursued her passion for design at the University of Colorado at Boulder, where she studied architecture and received a BA in Environmental Design. It wasn’t long until home called her back, and since then she has been diving into the interior design portion of MA’s projects. From 3D-modeling interiors to curating lookbooks, she loves being able to work as a team with architects and clients, and believes that interior design should complement a home's architecture and the lifestyle of the clients. Outside of design, Natalie loves outdoor adventures and exploring near and far. When she’s not in the office, you can likely find her playing around Lake Tahoe, visiting her local coffee shops, or perusing her favorite bookstores.

EMILY Mcguire

Emily joined the MA team in December of 2021 as our in-house planner and land use expert. She enjoys working hard on behalf of our clients to advance projects forward through complex regulatory environments. Her work experience in the land use field – particularly 6+ years in local government planning – makes her uniquely positioned to help us navigate layered regulations and governing agency approval processes for our projects across the country. Emily received a BA in Urban Studies and a BS in Conservation and Resource Studies from UC Berkeley. While in school, she developed a parallel interest in landscape architecture, which she is exploring by helping with some of our landscape designs. Emily developed a love for the outdoors while growing up in the Monterey Bay area and moved to the Tahoe area for its community of fellow outdoor enthusiasts. She spends her free time skiing, trail running, hiking, practicing plant identification, and gardening in the summer.

Alejandra joined Marsden Architects in 2022 as a Project Manager and Designer. She received her Bachelor of Science in Architecture and Master of Architecture from the University of Maryland where she was a Teaching Assistant for Architecture History, did three programs abroad in Italy, and received the Dean's Thesis Award. She has 15 years of experience working in mixed-use, multi-family, interiors, and luxury single-family residential at architecture firms in Washington D.C., New York City, Sacramento, and the Lake Tahoe area. Her favorite niche has been single-family residential; she loves working with clients and sharing their energy and excitement as the team works together to create their dream home. A fun fact about Alejandra is that she has visited 19 countries, and has lived in 7 states and 13 cities, including abroad in Chile where she is from. She is now happily settled in Lake Tahoe where she lives with her daughter and labradoodle.
